Moravian “Little Lambs"
(See Lambs schedule below)
Children, ages 2 to 8, and their parents, have formed the "Moravian Loving Little Lambs" group. This is the third year for this group, which has ended each yearly activity schedule with flower planting at the Church. Nancy Valudes, one of the leaders of the program, says “Our monthly programs provides us a way to instill compassion, kindness and love in our children as we do things as a family in the community.” Christy Von Stetten added, “ By planting flowers at the Church with our children, we engage them in an act of love and stewardship for the Church! Furthermore, we see the results of our work all summer. That’s very important for the children.”
"In October our children put on their Halloween costumes and visited Moravian Manor," reported Valudes. "The children could see by the expressions on the faces of the residents how much joy they brought to them.”
Valudes cited another event as being very rewarding, an April visit to the pediatrics division of Lancaster General Hospital. “The Little Lambs had prepared the cards that we attached to the stuffed-animals and balloons we gave to the children in the hospital.”
Von Stetten said, “We try to pick projects that are of interest to children. One month we collected supplies for the Humane League and visited the animals at the shelter. The children really enjoyed that.”
In November the parents and children strung beads to make bracelets and tree ornaments to be sold at the Lititz Moravian Advent Tea. In February we baked cookies and delivered them to Hospice for the families supporting their loved ones.
In January the children helped their parents make soup for a fundraiser. Von Stetten reported “This year the soup making went pretty well. We had a bunch of kids in the church kitchen dumping ingredients, stirring, and putting labels on containers. They worked really hard and we made 60 quarts to sell. The soup was pretty good.”
Three mothers were instrumental in organizing the “Little Loving Lambs” program Nancy Valudes, Christy Von Steten and Kathy Long. They all give credit to Cyndy Scibal for her encouragement. They are now working on next year’s schedule that will be announced in September. New families interested in participation are always welcome.
