Working with Body Cycles for Wellness
Wellness Report for March 2010

Working with Body Cycles for Wellness
Learning how to use the body's normal cycles for optimum digestion and metabolism of foods can help us lose weight, sleep more soundly and feel great!
1. Elimination Cycle - approximately 4:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. During this 8-hour period, the body is cleansing itself (eliminating wastes). To allow the body to accomplish this process, it's best to keep food intake to a minimum, consuming fruit or green smoothies, because they require minimal digestion and will not interfere with the cleansing process. As soon as we eat other foods (cereal, eggs, baked goods, etc.), the cleansing stops and wastes may accumulate.
2. Appropriation Cycle - approximately 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m. This is the 8-hour period when most of us eat our two main meals of the day. The body is most efficient at digesting foods during this time. It's also the time when we are "burning up" or appropriating our fuel because we're at our most active state of the day. We can merrily refuel and burn to find a comfortable feeling in the body and a great relationship with food! Eating when we are truly hungry is far more enjoyable than eating just because the clock dictates that it is mealtime.
3. Assimilation Cycle - approximately 8:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. Utilizing the food we have consumed during the day, or assimilation, takes place when we are relaxed, asleep or least active. The body is able to draw all the goodness out of our food and work on healing and rebuilding. If we are midnight snackers, this cycle is disturbed, and the body has to stop rejuvenating and start digesting again.
The concept of body cycles makes so much sense, but as with all things, the proof is in trying it and letting our bodies do what they were meant to do.
Green Smoothies
Many magazines, books, TV shows and educators are promoting green smoothies. They are a great way to consume more greens and fruits and veggies. So, grab a blender and try this one on for size:
Popeye's Punch
1/2 bunch fresh spinach, washed well and de-stemmed
3 oranges peeled and sectioned
1/4 fresh pineapple, cubed
1/4 cup fresh or frozen strawberries (optional)
Blend all ingredients until frothy...enjoy!
